So we’ve been stuck at home awhile. The winter is dragging and my kids are stir crazy. We all love fresh air and sunshine, but sister that’s just not on the menu right now. Whether it is bad weather or quarantine kids get cabin fever easily if you’re not prepared. That’s why it’s important to have a bank of go to activities you can do with your family when you are stuck indoors.
- Hide and Seek – A family favorite for us. We’ve stepped up the challenge as of recent and have even been playing in the dark.
- Shoe game – Maybe you’ve seen this at a wedding but you can totally do it with siblings too ! Instead of grabbing their dirty ‘ol shoes we opt for a spoon and fork though. We ask prompts like “Who is the messier one?, “Who sleeps in the latest” or “Who is the loudest?” Keep it general and friendly.
- I spy out of the window – This one is my favorite if we just need to kill a little bit of time and I need 10 minutes of sanity. It’s an easy, no mess, sit down sorta game the whole family can be a part of.
- Cook together – My personal favorite. I feel like I’m teaching them, spending intimate time together, annnd getting something done on our list! Its also wonderful for kids learning math fractions! Dress up and have a fancy dinner to celebrate while it’s in the oven.
- Read together – if you pair this with a bubble bath before, they will be ready for snooze town soon after. I love reading together because it immediately changes the tone of the evening… stressful night? Read together and connect through the pages of a good story.
- Create a vision board – This is all the fun. Ask around or on facebook if any of your friends have old magazines and get to work! Anything that draws inspiration from you – cut it out! We use the wall space heading into our basement. Behind a door would work great too! The most important thing about vision boards is to also check in with them often.
- Break out the board games – I mean, come on! They aren’t just taking up space in the closet for nothing. Create a good laugh with a round of uno or chutes and ladders.
- Camping in the living room – Pitch a tent or not but simply bringing down your favorite pillow and pairing that with a movie on the couch adds an extra dash of cozy. Grab the skewer sticks and roast marshmallows on the kitchen stove.
- Dance party – makeshift decor, a playlist, learn on youtube
- Make a time capsule. Especially during this wild ride were opening clips of our life as we know it today would be quite the reflection.
In whichever you choose I encourage you to allow your kids to teach you along the way. From cooking to dance moves , I think us momma could learn a thing or two. I sure could 🙂
